Now here’s one that’ll make any parent nod their head — British actress Keira Knightley (yeah, the one from Pirates of the Caribbean and Pride & Prejudice) just opened up about something that hits home for a lotta moms and dads these days.
She says she’s completely banned social media at her house. Yep — no TikTok, no Instagram, no X (or Twitter, whatever they call it now). Not even a peek at those dancing cat videos.
And her reason?
She says the internet’s gotten “terrifying and totally unregulated.”
In a recent chat with The Sunday Times, Keira didn’t sugarcoat a thing. She said the online world’s “just too wild and too dangerous” for her two daughters — Edie, 9, and Delilah, 4 — to even dip their toes into.
“You’ve got all these apps targeting kids, showing them things they shouldn’t even be thinking about,” she said. “It’s terrifying what’s out there.”
Now, that’s something a lots of parents can agree on. Between sketchy ads, fake influencers, and those endless filters making kids feel like they ain’t good enough — it’s no wonder more folks are pulling the plug.
Knightley and her husband, musician James Righton, are raising their girls the old-school way — books, backyard playtime, and real-world talking.
She says her daughters don’t have phones, and she plans to keep it that way for as long as she can.
“They’ll get phones eventually,” she said, “but not before they’re ready to handle what comes with it. I want them to grow up knowing who they are before the world tells them who to be.”
Now that’s some solid mama wisdom right there.
Keira’s not the only Hollywood star waving red flags about kids and screens. Folks like Jennifer Garner and Tom Holland have also spoken up about taking breaks from social media — for their mental health.
Keira says what really scares her is how fast misinformation spreads and how kids can stumble across “stuff they can’t unsee.”
“The internet’s not a babysitter,” she said. “It’s an open door to the whole world — and not everyone walking through that door has good intentions.”
Oof. She ain’t wrong.
Even for herself, Knightley says she keeps things tight. She doesn’t use social media much, and she doesn’t let the press of “likes” or “comments” get to her.
“I was on Instagram for a bit,” she said, “but it felt like shouting into the void. Everyone’s trying to be perfect, and no one is. I’d rather live in the real world.”
She also added that she’s not trying to tell everyone how to parent — just sharing what works for her family. But man, it’s refreshing to hear a celebrity being real about it.
Now, whether you live in London or right here in Texas, you’ve probably felt it too — how kids are growing up in a totally different world.
Back in the day, we worried about curfews. Now, it’s screen time and strangers in the DMs.
Keira said she just wants her daughters to have a childhood that’s not tied to algorithms and hashtags. “I want them to play outside, scrape their knees, and talk face-to-face,” she said.
Amen to that.
Knightley might be a Hollywood star, but what she’s saying sounds a whole lot like regular mom talk at a Little League game or school pickup.
She’s not against tech — she’s just cautious. “There’s good in it,” she said, “but it needs rules, and it sure as hell needs better protection for kids.”
And if there’s one takeaway from all this, it’s that even with fame and fortune, parenting in the digital age ain’t easy for anyone.
So yeah, Keira Knightley’s keeping her home social media–free, and honestly, she might be onto something.
In a world where most of us can’t go five minutes without checking our phones, maybe a little digital detox — even for the kiddos — ain’t such a bad idea after all.
